13 SERVICES · 4 SCOPES · 300 / 450 / 600

Kitchen renovation services, set out before anything is cut

Thirteen services, grouped into four scopes of work. Each one begins the same way — a measured survey of the room you already have, then a drawing that decides where every millimetre goes. Demolition is the sixth stage here, never the first.

A kitchen mid-renovation, with cabinetry and appliances protected by plastic and paper, a covered benchtop, exposed work areas, and a step ladder.

6 FACTS · 1 ROOM · CEILING 2340

Bring the room, not a wishlist

Scope is chosen from facts, not adjectives. Six pieces of information tell us more about your kitchen than any inspiration folder, and they cost nothing to gather before you get in touch.

  • Room dimensions wall to wall, plus ceiling height.
  • Where water, waste, gas and power currently enter the room.
  • Which walls are structural, and which you would happily move.
  • Appliances you are keeping, and the way their doors swing.
  • How many people cook at once, and whether anyone sits while you do.
  • The single thing about the current kitchen that annoys you daily.
Working towards a full rebuild? The Kitchen Renovation Checklist covers the same ground in more detail.

4 BANDS · 150 · 300 / 450 / 600 · 900

How the rebuild runs, stage by stage

Four bands of work, read left to right in the order they actually happen on site: strip-out, cabinetry, services and surfaces, then finishing. The stepped column widths below mirror standard cabinet modules, so the widest band carries the most coordination.

150

Strip-out

Floors and doorways protected. Appliances and services isolated. Old cabinetry and benchtops removed in one controlled pass. Substrate checked before anything new is ordered.

300 / 450 / 600

Cabinetry

Carcasses built to the room’s real dimensions rather than the nearest flat-pack size. Fronts, edges and hardware chosen to match daily use. Drawer runners and hinges specified, not assumed. See Custom Cabinetry.

900 · 1200

Services and surfaces

Plumbing and electrical rough-in coordinated against the cabinetry drawing, so tap, waste and power land where the joinery expects them. Benchtops templated to installed carcasses, then splashbacks measured to the finished stone.

13

Finishing

Fit-off, adjustment, silicone, clean and handover.

SCOPE 01 · WHOLE ROOMS

Renovations and refreshes

The difference between a rebuild and a refresh is how far back you strip. If the layout works and the carcasses are sound, replacing fronts, benchtops and the splashback changes the room without touching services. If the plan itself is the problem, it is cheaper in the long run to start from the measured drawing.

Not sure which side you fall on? What drives kitchen renovation cost sets out the variables.
01
Strip-out to handover in one program: cabinetry, benchtops, splashback, plumbing and electrical coordination, flooring interface and final fit-off.
12
New doors, drawer fronts, hardware, benchtop and splashback over sound existing carcasses — a shorter program with services left where they are.
04
Units, villas and apartment galleys, where the gain comes from clearances, full-height joinery and drawers instead of cupboards.
05
Handleless fronts, matte and micro-textured finishes, shadow-line detailing and the tighter tolerances those choices demand.
06
Larger programs with premium stone, integrated appliances, butler’s pantries and joinery that continues beyond the kitchen walls.

SCOPE 02 · DRAWING BEFORE BUILDING

Design and cabinetry

A layout is decided by clearances, not by taste: the walking space between a bench and an island, the arc of an open dishwasher door, the reach between cooktop, sink and fridge. Once those are fixed, cabinetry is drawn module by module — which bay takes drawers, which takes pull-outs, where the bin goes, how the appliance tower meets the ceiling.

02
Zoning, circulation and ergonomics resolved on paper, with elevations you can read before a single sheet is ordered.
03
Made-to-measure carcasses and fronts: door profiles, edge treatments, soft-close hardware and finishes selected for the way the room is used.
10
Walk-in and butler’s pantries, pull-out units, drawer inserts and the everyday storage planning that keeps benchtops clear.

SCOPE 03 · 20mm · 40mm · FULL HEIGHT

Surfaces and features

These three decisions carry most of the visible character of a kitchen, and they are made together — a benchtop edge sets the splashback junction, and an island’s overhang sets the seating. Each is templated to what is actually installed, never to the original plan.

07 · BENCH HEIGHT 900
Natural stone, porcelain, timber and laminate, compared on durability, maintenance and edge profile — plus how each is fabricated and joined. See also Benchtop Materials Compared.
08 · 600 CLEARANCE
Tile, glass and full-height stone, including how grout lines, tile format and finish read against your cabinetry. More in Splashback Ideas & Materials.
09 · 1000 WALKWAY
Sizing, seating overhang, waterfall ends, integrated storage and the services that have to run under the floor. More in Planning a Kitchen Island.

SCOPE 04 · FIT-OFF & ADJACENT JOINERY

Installation and laundry joinery

Some jobs arrive part-finished: cabinetry already supplied, or a laundry that should have been drawn alongside the kitchen in the first place. Both are handled as standalone scopes.

11
Kitchen Installation & Cabinetry Fit-Off
Setting and levelling carcasses, hanging fronts, benchtop templating and install, appliance and hardware fitting, scribes and final adjustment.

13
Laundry Cabinetry & Joinery
Trough and appliance bays, drying and folding space, tall storage and a benchtop that matches the kitchen when the two rooms share a wall.

13 STAGES · ONE SEQUENCE

Every scope runs the same order

Consultation · Measure · Design · Quote · Materials · Demolition · Cabinetry · Plumbing and electrical · Benchtops · Splashback · Installation · Finishing · Handover.

A makeover simply uses fewer of them. Read each stage in full on the Process page, or see how long a kitchen renovation takes.
